    Keith Haring(May 4, 1958 - February 16, 1990) was an American street artist and designer, best known for his graffiti-like drawings made throughout the 1980s. Haring's career as an artist began in the late 70s, upon moving to New York City in 1978 to study painting at the School of Visual Arts. In 1980, he began to draw with chalk on blank advertising space covered up with black pages on the New York City subways.     That drawing, “Untitled (Figure with Heart),” was one of a series of ink-on-paper drawings which Haring completed in 1987.

    Haring was born in Reading in 1958 and grew up in Kutztown, Berks County.

    An artist famous for his redefinition of “pop art” in the 1980s, Haring’s renown has grown exponentially since his death in 1990 at the age of 31.
