I began my career as an actor, and over time, I developed an interest in dramaturgy for devised performance and writing. I'm now a researcher in Performance Studies, who is broadly concerned with performance, economy, and identity.
My teaching has been both practical and analytic, covering performance theory, scriptwriting, feminism, histories of theatre and performance, and the politics of embodiment. I am as interested in live art as I am in plays, performance in daily life, and performance histories. In particular, I'm fascinated by highly theatrical and cinematic acts which also appear in public life more broadly. My thesis investigated the emergence of stunts in turn-of-the-century New York, in sport, politics, media, film and theatre. I explored how and why stunts enacted a devalued form of sport, art, and politics, and what this expressed about value more broadly.
I am now researching casting: its archival traces and histories, contemporary practice and politics, and discursive and material presence in wider culture. I have written on casting in Theatre Journal and PLATFORM, and I am co-editing a special issue of Studies in Theatre and Performance on casting and identity. Kirsten M. "Kiwi" Smith (born August 12, 1970) is an American screenwriter and novelist whose credits include Legally Blondeand Ella Enchanted. She has written most of her screenplays with her screenwriter partner Karen McCullah.
Early life

Smith[1] was born, 12 August 1970, in Contra Costa County, California and grew up in San Pedro, Los Angeles, on a sailboat, without TV, and spent much of her childhood writing.[2] After her family moved to Port Ludlow, Washington, she worked as a clerk at a video store before moving to Los Angeles in 1988 to attend Occidental College,[2] studying English and Film, and getting a degree in 1992,[3] then attended NYU's film program.[4]
