Pokwang came from a poor family in Iloilo. Her father was a drunkard while her mother did whatever work is available to support her twelve children. Pokwang is the seventh.
In 1990, Pokwang went to Japan to work as a dancer. Since her contract was only for six months, she has to come back to the Philippines and re-apply for another six months. She returned to the Philippines for good after two years. At that time, she was pregnant with her first child.
