Reviewer: Michael Zank, PhD. (Boston University) Is it possible to write a book about Hegel, Nietzsche, and the Jews sine ira et studio? For those who would have thought this to be an impossible task, Yirmiyahu Yovel’s Dark Riddle offers a surprise. Impartial and gentlemanly to the core, Yovel presents expositions of two of the most profound, influential, and controversial 19th-century thinkers whose works span the gamut from the completion of the modern project of rationality (Hegel) to its complete rejection from an anti-modern perspective (Nietzsche). The guiding question of the expositions is how Hegel and Nietzsche view and represent Jews and Judaism. The result is remarkable. Contrary to suspicions often voiced in the post-Holocaust era which make Hegel and, particularly, Nietzsche complicit in the deeds of their “bad readers” (Sloterdijk), Yovel posits that a) preoccupation with the Jews on the part of these philosophers was unavoidable because of their concern with the radically historical character of cultural developme
